Brush away Paint’s near-death; use Hatch instead

A few days ago, Microsoft announced that it was going to soon stop supporting one of its longstanding official windows software programs – Microsoft Paint. The free, lightweight, simple art creation tool has been a staple of every windows release for many years. People all over the world use it to create artwork and edit images. As such, it came as quite a shock that the program was soon to be no longer supported by Microsoft (to be replaced by the much more advanced Paint 3D) considering how long it had been in use!

The cynics among us may think that Microsoft’s PR team has orchestrated this entire furore; it certainly got Microsoft Paint a lot of press coverage, in fact the entire planet seemed to be covering the event. This got Microsoft’s replacement, Paint 3D, huge reach as it was keenly mentioned in most news articles as the successor to the old Paint program.

‘Proper’ graphic designers and artists were certainly not mourning the loss of Microsoft Paint, well apart from maybe this guy, but the majority were happy to see the highly restrictive, basic image creator finally gone. For a few days’ graphic designers and artists did rejoice. All was well. The hysteria had died down and life returned to normal.

Until, like Arnold Schwarzenegger in terminator, Paint declared ‘I’ll be back’ and is now remaining on the Microsoft app store after all. Whilst we are sure many are happy to hear the news, here at Hatch we can safely say we would not be grieving the loss. Why use Paint anyway? It’s so 2003.
